Hello again today I am going to be talking to you about 5 degrees that are at either Bath Spa Uni or Essex Uni that related to Games in some way or another. This blog is purely for people who want to get into the games industry and would like to have ideas of what degree to get. I hope that you'll find this helpful.
Games Degree
The obvious choice for this career pathway has got to be any degree with a gaming focus. This is mainly due to the fact that you purely learn about games and how they are made so you can transfer your skills straight into the work force. By having a degree directly related to games, you are opening more opportunities for you to be considered jobs whilst building a portfolio for future employers. Because of this you may look very employable to games companies due to having actual experience and knowledge already made in class.
Creative computing
At Bath Spa University the Creative Computing course offers a wide range of modules from CodeLab to 3D modelling to even Experience Design. These modules can help you to get a career in games because you can learn different parts of how to develop a game and apply them to jobs later down the line. This Uni also offers a placement year in between Year two and three to let you add to your CV. With all of this a career in games is a no brainer.
Computer Science/Computing
Computer degrees, especially ones with a focus on computer science, lend out the best programmers. Having a computer science degree or even a computing degree will almost always help out if you definitely want to be a programmer. This degree will help you to get a foot in the industry as you'll be able to program with a degree and some projects it prove it to employers. If you haven't tried coding before, I'll definitely suggest trying out Python to make sure its the right career path and overall choice for you.
Creative Writing
Creative Writing might be a bit of a shock but hear me out with this one. Game writing jobs are usually hard to find/get into but being able to write will get you into other related jobs to games. There's always a need for game journalists, social media, manuals, and so on and so on. You might not be working on a game but you sure can write about them with a Creative Writing degree. I send my apologies to people who got upset by this section.
Business
Every great game needs someone to make sure it's going smoothly. Whether you'll be the next Doug Bowser or just a shy guy (badum tss) who runs the social media, there's a need for someone with a business or business related degree in games. This doesn't mean that it's the easy route but it does seem easier if you have a degree and experience to back yourself up, so give it a shot!
