Hello today I am going to be discussing different ways you could help to spread awareness for women in games. Throughout I’ll be leaving ideas on how to get other genders into career fields they wouldn’t usually be seen in too. By doing this I hope that you would take food for thought from the ideas presented to you.
Girls in Gaming Club
By having a club dedicated to girls in gaming it can help spread awareness of that topic and inspire girls to get into the gaming industry. This club can range for different clubs but as an example, the girls in gaming club that I'm a part of is mainly girls in the gaming course at college. Through this club we got together last year to spread awareness of the course and we managed to get more girls on the course. After half term we're getting together again. For your club you could do it slightly different like just a discussion about women in games with a group of people, or even just get a group of women to make a game or two.
This idea can be adapted for different ideas. For example, Boys in Nursing or Enby's in Business. In these versions of the club you can spread awareness of genders that aren't usually represented in different careers. By having these clubs we can spread awareness of the topics and make it not so daunting for anyone to get into these careers.
Coding Club
Coding clubs not only allows people to learn coding, but also lets there be a safe space for women to learn skills related to games dev. Coding and computers tend to be stereotyped to be done by white or Asian males so having a club that inspires diversity is important in breaking this stereotype. Some ideas could be Girls do Code or a Black Coders club. A couple of ways you couple branch this idea out is to find a skill related to any industry and join/make it in your school or community.
Assemblies
Assemblies are especially good for people who are in schools or colleges and would like to bring attention to different careers and the people who are in it. This could link back to the first two ideas by using a girls in gaming club to do an assembly every week or two. If you're a careers adviser you could also use this as an opportunity to research and spread awareness yourself.
Blogging/vlogging
Blogging and vlogging can be great platforms for spreading awareness about girls in gaming. These techniques can be used to be able to spread first hand awareness of what its like to be a women in the industry. Another way is like what I'm doing and just talk about women in games even if you're not in the industry. I can't think of vlogs on top of my head but you should go out and make them. By blogging and vlogging about topics you love, you can also put it into Uni applications to show passion about the specific topic. For example, if you're interested in medicine then blog/vlog once a week and use that as a talking point for applying to university.
Other Social Media Posts
Instagram, Reddit, and Twitter are all good social media platforms to help raise awareness of girls in gaming but also any topic in general. Social media is used world wide and by posting to social media people will see and interact with the content. This is a good thing as by spreading awareness of a topic to different people, different people will be able to learn about it. By concentrating on a niche that you love can also help you to gain followers and build a wider audience for your work.
That's all the tips that I have got for now and I hope that you can take them on board. If you have anymore ideas then please share them. Thanks for reading xx
